2021 Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

We are well into Spring 2021, and that means it’s time to take stock of the impact winter had on our homes, and prepare them for warmer weather.

Here are a few tips to consider. They may help save you money in the long run.

CHECK FOR DAMAGE TO THE EXTERIOR FOUNDATIONS AND DRIVEWAY
When water gets into cracks and freezes, it expands and can cause damage to concrete foundations and driveways. Look into sealing any major cracks before they get too large.

EXAMINE THE ROOF SHINGLES AND EAVESTROUGHS
Winter winds can wreak havoc on your roof shingles. Check to make sure that shingles have not blown off or popped up exposing your roof.

Also, check your eavestroughs and make sure they are undamaged and clear of any blockages.

REPAIR AND REPAINT EXTERIOR FIXTURES
After a winter of stormy weather, your fence or your deck may have taken a beating. Check for any damage (particularly to decks where damaged wood could be dangerous for guests) and make sure to reseal any exterior wooden fixtures every so often to protect them.

CARE FOR EXTERIOR PLANTS
If you have any exterior plants, you may have wrapped them up to protect them from the elements. When it is warm enough, you can unwrap them and give them any care they might need.

CHECK DOORS AND WINDOWS FOR LEAKS AND DAMAGED SCREENS
Spring is a great opportunity to check for any leaks in your windows and doors. You can use caulking to seal up any spots where air or water are getting into your home.

This is also a chance to check for any holes in window screens, to prevent any insects from getting in when you want to start opening up for some fresh air.

AIR CONDITIONER MAINTENANCE
If you have an AC unit, this is the best time for you to make sure it’s in good working condition, giving you enough time to take care of any issues before you’ll be using it over the summer.

INSPECT THE BASEMENT
There are two major things to watch out for in your basement: concrete damage (similarly to the note above) on the exterior walls, which could get worse over time if not sealed, and leaks which may have occurred over the winter, which could lead to water damage or mold and mildew.

REFRESH YOUR SPACE
Of course, there is always the bit of dusting, cleaning, and tidying that helps make your home feel fresh and clean after a long winter. It is also a great time to put out or replace exterior furniture, to help you enjoy the warmer weather.

Home maintenance can often seem daunting, but taking on a project every week or so will make it feel manageable while also allowing you to keep your home in great condition.
